LEGAL NOTE: SIMPSON’S PERKS AND PAY

With regret www.dearunite.com have had to take down the text of The Times’s newspaper article of 17th January entitled ‘Union chief’s secret deal over perks and pay rise’ because on Friday Derek Simpson commenced libel proceedings against The Times.

As this action has been officially announced by the union, and legal action in vague terms was endorsed at the last Executive meeting, we suspect that it is being financed by members’ monies.  We estimate the cost of such an action will end up at around £1/4 to £1/2 million - even simple libel case costs are over £100,000.  Any damages, if awarded, would normally go directly into Mr Simpson’s pocket.

We would have published The Times article with the offending bits redacted; however we were unable to identify any obvious libel within it.   So instead we publish here a graph derived directly from the union’s own analysis of Simpson’s salary and benefits, from their Annual Returns up to the latest, 2007 (i.e. prior to any recent pay rise)

The full Annual Returns are publically available from the Certification Officer here:

2005

2006

2007(to 26th April 2007)

2007 (Unite - remainder of year)
