Plans for a merger that would create
Britain’s biggest union are in danger of being
scrapped, according to senior union sources.
Talks on merging Amicus, the T&G and the
GMB general union into a super-union have hit
trouble over its structure and leadership.
Senior officials of the GMB and the T&G
privately blame Amicus for proposing that the
new union should have strict central control.
The general secretaries of the three unions are
due to meet today and a senior GMB source said
that the merger was doubtful. A T&G
colleague said that its chances were about even.
An alternative merger, of the T&G and the
GMB, could be considered.
The T&G supports a
three-way merger but its general secretary, Tony
Woodley, and the leader of Amicus, Derek
Simpson, are competing over who should head the
new
body.
